In this informative FREE webinar, speakers will discuss holistic assessment and placement, including how one institution is including noncognitive assessment into a dramatic redesign of its developmental education efforts. This webinar will feature Ross Markle, Ph.D., Senior Research and Assessment Advisor for the Global Education division at ETS, and Tori Christie, Vice President of Student Services at Iowa Western Community College.
For many entering college students, a single score on a placement test places them into developmental education, presenting an immediate and significant hurdle to their success. The last decade has seen a variety of modifications to the way we approach student placement in an effort to improve student success.
One method involves holistic assessment, or using multiple measures outside of the placement test alone. In our model we use an assessment of noncognitive factors to help identify students who might succeed, even with slightly lower placement test scores. This placement paradigm not only allows institutions to shorten or eliminate the developmental sequence for some students, but it also provides a more thorough understanding of the strengths and challenges that each student faces, so that–regardless of where they are placed–students can receive the right cocurricular supports and improve their chances of success.
