The purpose of financial regulation

In 1970, the collapse of the monetary system established by Bretton Woods accelerates the process of financial globalization. Gradually born a global market, and deregulated: capital exports are freed of national controls, tariffs fall, this liquidity in financial markets increased.

Central Park, the playground of the metropolis

Central Park is a recreational and cultural space, as well as an oxygenating green area in the middle of this crowded, towering city. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed the 340-hectare park in 1858. Olmsted’s aim was, in his words, to « supply hundreds of thousands of tired workers who have no opportunity to spend summers in the country with a specimen of God’s handiwork ». The project was known as « Greensward ».
It’s amazing how natural the rolling hills and tranquil ponds seem, because the entire landscape of the park is manufactured, just like the skyscrapers that skirt the edges. Before construction of the park, it was swampy land, inhabited by poor Irish and German immigrants and a well-established African-American community known as Seneca Village. All were displaced, a cruel irony after Olmsted’s pledge of designing it for « tired workers ».
Recently, city officials established eight « Quiet Zones », clearing certain areas of the buskers that used to fill the park with music. Still, there is a good deal of other no-cost entertainment to be found. In summertime, the New York Public Theater stages Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater. Tickets are free, but getting a pair requires showing up early in the morning and waiting in line at the box office. The New York Philharmonic and the New York City Opera give outdoor performances on the Great Lawn, and SummerStage festival brings contemporary acts to an open-air venue at Rumsey Playfield for concerts, many with free admission.
