The functioning of any practical enterprise cannot take place without managing physical systems of various kinds. The physical systems consist of tangible and quantifiable variables. This book provides a theory of physical systems which is a general systems theory to act as a base for modelling a vast variety of physical systems. This theory, which is termed as physical systems theory (PST) has been suitably amended and integrated with other modelling methodologies, in a flexible system methodological framework, to cover a range of physical systems from operational to tactical to strategic.
The book is aimed to provide a comprehensive flow modelling framework to suit a variety of physical systems in managerial context, both at micro and macro levels. The objective of the book is to provide the fundamentals and developments on methodology front with flexibility in modelling by suitable integration with other methodologies, to be illustrated by a variety of applications at operational, tactical and macro levels. This illustrates the potential of the proposed flexible modelling methodology that can be taken up by management researchers, students, and practitioners.
The management applications covered in the book encompass the areas of manufacturing management; organizational and tactical management; and socio-economic systems. The applications in the context of manufacturing management cover multistage manufacturing systems, manufacturing of compression springs and turbogenerators, a closed chain production system with storage, an optimization model for technology selection, analysis of cost and quality, inspection policy, and integrated material handling systems. Applications in organizational and tactical management cover the areas such as integrated financial decision-making, organizational analysis, project management, management information system, and decision support system for maintenance management. At the macro level socio-economic systems, a variety of applications are presented such as intersectoral modelling of national economy, national budget, energy planning, steel planning, transport systems, and waste management systems. | | About the Author: | Sushil is Abdulaziz Alsagar Chair Professor (Professor of Strategic, Flexible Systems and Technology Management), and Chair, Strategic Management Group at the Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He is currently serving as Dean (Faculty), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He has served as Visiting Professor and delivered seminars in many leading universities, such as University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ, University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Université Paris 1 Panthéon–Sorbonne, Paris, among others. He is an active researcher and has supervised more than 50 doctoral dissertations. He has eighteen books to his credit in the areas of Flexibility, Strategy, Systems Thinking, and Technology Management and over 250 papers in various refereed journals and conferences. He is the Founder, Editor–in–chief of Global Journal of Flexible Systems Management and serving on the Editorial Boards of leading international journals. He is the Editor of Book Series on Flexible Systems Management published by Springer.
He has pioneered the area of ‘Flexible Systems Management’ and made original contributions to the field of knowledge in the form of interpretive approaches in management such as SAP–LAP models/linkages, Total Interpretive Structural Modelling, and Interpretive Ranking Process. He has evolved the concept and framework of ‘Flowing Stream Strategy’ as strategic flexibility to manage continuity and change. He has also provided mantras for continuous organizational vitalization (LIFE), and models for strategic performance management (Flexible Strategy Game-card), sustainable enterprise (Star Model) and strategy execution (4A’s Model).
Currently he is serving as Independent Director on the Boards of RINL, HSCC, and River Engineering. He has acted as consultant to both governmental and industrial organizations; a few representative ones are Ford Foundation, APCTT, UN, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Wipro Infotech, LG Electronics, Rockwell International, Tata Consultancy Services, James Martin & Co., Gas Authority of India Ltd., Sona Koyo Steering Systems, and NBCC.
