Lightning

Lightning is a beautiful display of nature's power, reaching from the sky to the ground. Only sometimes there are some things in between the sky and the ground... Thanks to modern safety features no major harm is done to anything or anyone, but we do get some great sights thanks to these rare occasions. These beautiful pictures capture that amazing split second where lightning hits some of the best known landmarks in the world:

The Vatican

In 2013 Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world by stepping down from his position, becoming the first Pope to resign in over 600 years. Just a few hours later, a massive lightning bolt struck the basilica of St.Peter's dome.

The Bay Bridge - San Francisco

Big metal structures often get hit by lightning, but in this pictures from 2012, the Bay Bridge in being struck by eight bolts at once!

The Eiffel Tower – Paris

The French landmark has a known history of lightning strikes, these two pictures are from 2008 and 2013.

Washington Monument – Washington D.C

It is a little known fact that the massive monument was fitted with an aluminum cap and copper lightning rods during the 1800's. They were placed to protect the giant structure from strikes like this one in 2013.

Statue of Liberty – New York

These lightning strikes make Lady Liberty look absolutely stunning!

The Grand Canyon – Arizona

Even the deserts of Arizona sometimes have stormy weather that can humble even the majestic beauty of the canyon.

Empire State Building - New York

This gigantic lighning bolt from 2002 makes even the mighty building look like a tiny tooth-pick.

Burj Khalifa, Dubai

When you are building the tallest building in the world your practicality begging for lightning strikes…

Icelandic Volcano

In 2010 the Icelandic Volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted and caused an ash storm that grounded nearly all the planes in Europe. A side effect of that storm was this massive bolt aimed right at the top of the mountain.

In 2013 a baseball game between the Cardinals and the Royals was delayed mid-way through the game for four hours due to rain. The game ended at 3AM and this was probably the most exciting part of it.

Creative and Mind Bending Optical Illusions

Our eyes are amazing tools that allow us to experience the world and tell our brain what is going on around us. But what happens when our brain can't understand what he sees? Optical illusions create a miscommunication between our eyes and brain making us see things that are not really there or not seeing things that are right in front of our eyes. Try it for yourself and you'll see:

Theses three cars all look to be in different sizes right?

Wrong, they are all the same size.

Are you having trouble figuring out who is in the picture? Cross your eyes a bit and the answer will be clear.

Stare at the woman's nose for about 10 seconds and then blink a few times while looking at a white wall. Look at the woman again and she is now in full color.

Stare at this picture for about 30 seconds then look at the one below it.

Focus on the black dot in the center of the picture until it changes to black and white. Only now the picture isn't black and white, your brain automatically adds the color. Blink a few times and the picture is black and white again.

All the little circles in the picture are white but as you look over them some seem to turn black.

This park in Paris looks like it has a huge statue of a globe with tiny people on it.

But it's really a very clever flat garden design.

By putting two different picture of a face one on top of the other you can get this amazing face photo.

A 3 dimensional painting looks like an accident waiting to happen.

If you look closely at each dot you will see that none of them are moving in a circle or changing color.

Is the orange circle on the right really bigger than the one on the left?

No, they are both the same size, you're welcome to test it yourself.

This is a nice little trick called the Ames room. We expect a room to be square and even but this room is really a trapez which means we can't see what is really going on.

It's hard to believe but A and B are both the same color.

And here's the proof:

Despite what you might see, none of these circles in the first picture are moving or touching each other.

And last but not least, the simplest illusions are very often the most beautiful. It's amazing what you can do with a simple mirror.

Vehicles That Are Out of the Ordinary

I've seen some strange things on the road before, but nothing quite as bizarre as these oddball vehicles. There's a good chance that you won't spot any of them cruising down the highways anytime soon. You won't believe the extent these owners went to when they built their weird creations on wheels.
