African Okavango Delta

The tranquil Okavango Delta, a 15,000sqkm flood plain that fans out in the northwestern corner of Botswana, is one of the world’s greatest natural miracles; a verdant paradise of palms, papyrus, crystal-clear channels and deep lagoons. Set in a massive sea of desert sand, the fragile wonderland is an oasis for wildlife drawn to its life-giving waters.

In the delta, the evening air is filled with the sounds of birds calling, frogs trilling and antelope rustling in the reeds. Wildebeest, hartebeest, buffalo and zebra roam the islands; herds of elephant wade across channels guarded by hippos and outsized crocodiles; and leopard, hyena and lion rule the night, preying on massive herds of wary herbivores.

Run by Wilderness Safaris, one of the largest safari companies in southern Africa, Mombo Camp is located on the northern tip of Chief’s Island, within the Okavango Delta’s Moremi Game Reserve.

Built under large, shady trees and overlooking the floodplains that teem with wildlife year round, Mombo Camp’s nine spacious tents have indoor and outdoor showers, making it possible to take an al fresco shower while hippos graze nearby.

Encircling the Okavango Delta, the Kalahari Desert is a large, semi-arid savannah extending 900,000sqkm over much of Botswana as well as parts of Namibia and South Africa. Derived from the Tswana word kgala, meaning “the great thirst”, or khalagari, meaning “a waterless place”, the Kalahari’s vast areas of red sand have no permanent surface water. However, it is not a true desert; some parts receive more 250mm of erratic rainfall annually and are quite well vegetated.

Overlooking an immense salt pan, Wilderness Safaris’ Kalahari Plains Camp (KPC) is perfectly situated within the CKGR. As with Mombo, the best way to witness surrounding wildlife is to take a dawn or late afternoon game drive.

The San people, or Bushmen, have been living in and around the CKGR for thousands of years. Originally nomadic hunters and gatherers, the lifestyle of the Bushmen has gradually changed with the times, and many of them now live in settlements, some of which are situated within the southern half of the reserve. Like many hunter-gatherer tribes the world over, the Bushmen are finding it difficult to maintain their traditional culture and lifestyle. There are only about 3,000 Bushmen left that still follow a totally traditional lifestyle (out of a total population of 95,000). Nomadic groups usually number 10 to 15 individuals and move around frequently to find new foods and resources.

The easiest way to access the Okavango Delta and CKGR is to fly to the South African city of Johannesburg, connecting through to the Botswanan city of Maun, gateway to both destinations. From Maun, Wilderness Safaris operates turboprop flights to all their camps in the area. More on all of Wilderness Safaris' Botswana camps can be found on their website.
Other highly popular Botswana camps are run by Uncharted Africa. These are based in the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans, an extensive network of salt pans and ephemeral lakes lying just to the northwest of the CKGR and also accessed via Maun. (Daniel Allen)

Trekking High

What could possibly go wrong? The tourist trek thousands of feet up a Chinese mountain along wooden boards that were nailed together 700 years ago

PUBLISHED: 11:59 GMT, 29 May 2013 UPDATED: 16:57 GMT, 29 May 2013
These vertigo-inducing pictures show tourists navigating an extremely narrow and treacherous walkway along cliffs at a scenic mountain in China's Shaanxi Province.
The precipitous Chang Kong Cliff Road on Haushan mountain was built more than 700 years ago by hermits seeking ‘immortals’ they thought were living deep in the mountains.
The walkway is only a foot width wide and has been built clinging to the absolutely vertical cliff. One misstep would send pilgrims plunging thousands of feet down into the valley.
These days, anyone brave enough to navigate the path does have to wear a special safety harness.

Tiger's new playground

Tiger Woods is preparing to move into his $60 million Florida mansion - which comes complete with a running track and four-hole golf course.
The golfer, whose marriage to Elin Nordegren ended in a hugely expensive divorce last year, posted photos of his new pad on his blog and said

'I'm excited about that and I'm even more excited about my new practice facility. It's phenomenal.'
Following their divorce - which is rumoured to have cost Woods $100 million - the former World Number One took over the planning and has
transformed the property into a state of the art bachelor pad.
The mansion, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean , boasts huge windows for incredible sea views and has a glass-fronted lift for anyone too tired to take the stairs.
As well as a gigantic master bedroom - with, a little ironically, his-and-hers bathrooms - there are three further bedroom suites.
According to his architects' plans, the basement also houses a large wine cellar and possibly a cinema and games area with the best equipment for Woods'
children Sam and Charlie.
Scores of tall trees and high boundary walls surround the plot, ensuring the privacy the golfer craves.
Another four buildings adjoin the main house, including a boathouse, golf training studio, a stand-alone garage and a huge guesthouse.

'It features four greens, six bunkers with different depths and kinds of sand, a video center and a putting studio.

Twins And Triplets

Can you tell them apart? The identical twins captured by artist who says tiny irregularities in their faces betray personality differences

A New York-based photographer has captured the slight variances in appearance between identical twins and triplets of all ages in his newest series.
Martin Schoeller, 45, says even though his subjects look alike they still have tiny differences in their faces, many of which are the result of their different life choices.
'One person’s been smoking, or one is married with kids and the other is living a party lifestyle, he toldFast Company. 'Some are more at ease, some are more nervous. So even if they look much alike, you can distinguish personalities.'

Gujarat Technological University goof up in remedial exam

AHMEDABAD: Nearly 1,000 students appearing for the remedial exams of the civil engineering branch conducted by the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) were surprised when they found that a ten mark question did not have a figure in the sum which was to be solved!

Students cried foul and the centre supervisors instantly drew attention of GTU authorities. Inquiry revealed that the paper setter himself had forgotten to put the figure in the sum leading to the ruckus.

GTU officials however used technology to solve the problem. Two questions were sent to the centre supervisors through SMS to their mobile phones which were relayed to the students.

In charge examination controller of GTU, GP Vadodaria said that the missing figure in the examination paper was brought to their attention and the matter was instantly resolved.

Poor result at GTU Engg. student

The low 27 per cent result of first semester degree engineering students announced by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has raised a big question mark over the quality of teaching in the engineering colleges in the state. Analysis of the result reveals that unlike the conventional belief that the low result is due to poor quality of students.

Students with 35-45 per cent HSC marks had gained admission in engineering courses and also poor teaching may be one of the prime reasons. Government engineering colleges, which see high merit in admissions, too have recorded equally poor result. There are 12-odd government engineering colleges that have posted a result lower than the average 27 per cent over all result of 97 colleges.

The highest result has been posted by Grant-in-aid College, Birla Mahavishwavidyalaya, Vallabh Vidya Nagar. The two engineering colleges in the campus have posted 72.36 per cent and 61.90 per cent result respectively. The lowest result has been recorded by self-financed engineering colleges at Tuwa, Godhra where only 3.15 per cent students have passed the first semester exam.

Amongst the government engineering colleges, the highest 56.63 per cent result has been posted by Vishwakarma Engineering College, Chandkheda while LD Engineering College is second with 54.93 per cent result. Palanpur Government Engineering College has recorded the lowest result with only 10.09 per cent students clearing the exam. Over all, there are 67 colleges that have recorded pass percent lower that the overall average results of 27 per cent.

There are 15 colleges where less than ten percent students have passed the first semester GTU exam. GTU vice chancellor A. K. Aggrawal said the low result even in government colleges is because the quality of teaching in colleges has gone down. "Number of hours of teaching has gone down in colleges. There is lot less teaching happening in the state colleges which has resulted students faring badly in exams. Scarcity of teachers is an all-India phenomenon", Aggrawal said.

Only 26% of MBA students in GTU clear all subjects in 1st semester

Only 26 per cent of 6,027 MBA students in 96 management colleges across the state managed to clear all the papers of their first semester examinations held in January this year. These colleges are affiliated to the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) that also takes care of engineering and pharmacy institutes as well.
However, the remaining 74 per cent of students, who received ATKT (allowed to keep term) for having failed in one to four subjects, were promoted to the second semester. According to university authorities, they were promoted to the next semester under a policy in most of the Indian universities though it has come under criticism from some quarters.
The university officials, in private conversation, admit that this is not a good trend in management education who are excepted to take up challenging assignments after completion of their degrees. But they say this is the trend all over the country excepting a few well-known management institutes.
But Vice-Chancellor Akshai Aggarwal tried to make light of the results by saying that the pass percentage in six, out of seven subjects, was from 63.7 per cent to 88.4 per cent. It was only in Quantitative Analysis paper involving mathematical calculations that 51 per cent of the students failed, bringing down the overall pass percentage to merely 26 per cent.
University officials said most of the students having received ATKT or failed in one to four subjects were from colleges in mofussil towns where there was no proper arrangement of teachers and libraries. Officials said the performance of students in cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat was, however, satisfactory.
Aggarwal said there was acute shortage of teachers in management institutes located in smaller towns.
