Durga Kavach
http://youtu.be/rqgvyF9LBHk

Don’t stare at me, I am human too: acid attack survivor Laxmi

My name is Laxmi. Read my story. I'm one of you. In fact, I am like you. I was young and beautiful and I had a dream. Even when I was studying in a Delhi school in Class VII, I would spend hours singing. I'd recorded my songs and sent them to talent hunt competitions. I was waiting for a call from 'Indian Idol'.
A photo of acid attack victim Laksmi at the office of NGO Stop Acid Attack in New Delhi. (Gurinder Osan/Hindustan Times)
I'm from a poor family. My father worked as a chef in a South Delhi home. I became friends with another girl in the neighbourhood and her brother soon started proposing to me. I was only 15 and he, 32 years old. On April 18, he messaged me: "I love you.'' I ignored it, but the next day he messaged again: "I want an instant reply.'' Again I didn't respond.
Three days later, I was waiting for a bus in a crowded Central Delhi area in daytime. He approached me with his brother's girlfriend. Before I knew it, they had flung me onto the road, pinned me down and threw acid on my face.

I kept screaming for help but no one stepped forth. Everyone ran in the opposite direction. I could feel my flesh burning and I covered my eyes with my arms. That reflex action saved me from losing my vision.
Acid corrodes quickly. Within a few seconds, I had lost my face, my ear had melted and both my arms were charred black. A politician's driver took me to a hospital, where I was to stay for the next 10 weeks.
I saw myself in the mirror at the end of 10 weeks and couldn't believe what the acid had done to me. The doctors had to remove the entire skin from my face and keep it bandaged. I've already had seven surgeries and need at least four more before I can go in for plastic surgery, provided I can afford it.
I learnt to live with the physical pain but what hurt more was the way the society reacted. My own relatives stopped seeing me, as did my friends. I stayed indoors for eight years and ventured out only in a ghungat.
My main attacker was out on bail within a month and he soon got married. He returned to a normal life within a month, but what about me? Nobody even wants to be my friend; how can I even hope that I'll have a lover or a husband?
I tried to pick up a job but nobody was willing to hire me. Some said: "People will get scared if they see you." Others said they will call back but, of course, the phone never rang. I tried BPOs, banks and beauty parlours but all I got was rejection. Nobody wants to hire acid victims because of the way they look.
But I ask you, is it our fault? Society accepts those born blind or those who are physically challenged. Why are we shunned? If you ask me, we are worse off than rape victims because with our faces burnt, we seem to have lost our identity.
I still sing. I love music. I love partying. I love nail polish. I design and tailor my own clothes. I have desires like you do, but I seem to scare off people.
The only support I got was from my parents, my doctor, my lawyer Aparna Bhatt and from the couple at whose house my father worked. They paid for my surgeries and are still in touch with me.
Even while my parents were coping with the attack, my brother came down with tuberculosis and my father died. I was shattered for the second time.
In the instant that my father died, I had to carry the burden of being the bread earner for the family. My mother has to constantly be by my brother's side and feels really upset that she cannot spend time with me.
I gathered myself together and pursued my case in court. My lawyer had filed a petition in the Supreme Court, asking for a ban on the sale of acid.
Slowly, I started getting in touch with other victims, most of who are blinded or have lost their hearing. Each one of us is poor and cannot afford multiple surgeries.
You can't bear to look at us but we don't have the money to buy ourselves new faces. My friends - yes, I've made new friends and they are all acid victims - are mostly blind.

You stare at us and gather your children in a hurry, hoping they haven't got scared just looking at us. Why don't you tie a band around your eyes and see how dark it gets.
That's how dark our world is.
I hope you never have to inhabit it, but I do hope you understand it. Don't give me the strength if you can't, but don't try and break my confidence. I've just learnt to move on.
I started an online petition and was happy when 27,000 people signed it. I went to the home ministry to submit it to Sushil Kumar Shinde. We waited for three hours but he didn't have even five minutes for us. I had to finally ambush his car to hand over the petition.
Nahim Khan, the man who had attacked me with acid, had to go back to jail after the court awarded him a seven-year sentence. He will be free in two years and continue with life. But my scars will remain forever..
My legal fight will continue. The Supreme Court has ordered states to pay Rs. 3 lakh as compensation, but what about our medical costs - some of us need to undergo 30-40 surgeries? What about jobs? How about sensitising the police force and trials in fast-track courts?
Even countries like Bangladesh have implemented stringent laws to deal with acid crimes but India has resisted it for so long. So many could have been saved. I need your help. We need the government to compensate us too. What about so many of us who are still suffering. Should the law not be with retrospective effect?
I have a dream and I want to live it.
(As told to Harinder Baweja)

Just to enhance your knowledge

This year on July 20, 2013 will be the Birth Centenary of the designer of
the most coveted Medal, The PARAM VIR CHAKRA.

Subject: Param Vir Chakra –India’s highest gallantry award Who Desgned
it and What it means.

Very interesting article on PVC as The Param Vir Chakra is referred to.

Param Vir Chakra –India’s highest gallantry award Who Designed it and
What it means.

Ask any aspirant, serving or a retired personal of Indian Defence
Services, these three words “Param Veer Chakra” mean more than their
life to
them. Many who have attained Martyrdom while fighting for the nation
with extreme courage have been honoured by this medal, for every other
young man who stands at the Line of Action it is the ultimate dream
& honour.Have you ever thought about what does the design on that
medal mean or who designed it?? Let me tell you about it.

Savitri Khanolkar is the designer of India's highest gallantry award,
the Param Vir Chakra.

Savitri
Khanolkar, born Eve Yvonne Maday de Maros, on July 20, 1913 - 1990
in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, to a Hungarian father André de Maday,
professor of sociology at Geneva University and President of the Société
de Sociologie de Genève, and Russian mother Marthe Hentzelt, who taught
at the Institut Jean-Jacques Rousseau. She later was known as Savitri
Bai, the name she was given after she married an Indian, became a
Hindu and took Indian nationality.

She spent her early childhood in Geneva, where she grew to be a
compassionate girl with a love of nature and the outdoors. In 1929,
when she was still a teenager, she met Vikram Khanolkar, who born in
Marathi family, a young Indian Army
officer undergoing training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in
the United Kingdom, who was holidaying in Europe. Although he was many
years older than she was, Eve fell in love with him. Her father
however, did not agree to let her go away to a faraway country like
India but
Eve was a determined young woman, and her love was strong. She followed
Vikram to India a few years later, and in 1932, she married him at
Mumbai. She began her new life adapting to Indian culture as Mrs.
Savitribai Khanolkar.

Despite coming (or maybe because of
coming) from a European background, Savitri Bai identified so closely
with Indian traditions and ideals, that her integration into Indian
society was smooth and effortless. She was a vegetarian, learnt to
speak fluent Marathi, Sanskrit and Hindi
and learnt Indian music, dance and painting. She always claimed that
she had been "born in Europe by mistake" as she was Indian soul, & woe
unto him who dared to call her a 'foreigner' & quote; She was so
fascinated with Hindu mythology that
she read extensively from Hindu scriptures and had a deep knowledge of
India's ancient history and legends. It was this knowledge that led
Major General Hira Lal Atal, the creator of the Param Vir Chakra, to
ask for Savitri Bai's help in designing a medal that would truly
symbolize
the highest bravery.  Soon after Indian independence, she was asked by
the Adjutant General Major
General Hira Lal Atal to design India’s highest award for bravery in
combat, the Param Vir Chakra. Major General Hira Lal Atal was given
the responsibility for creating and naming independent India’s new
military decorations. His reasons for choosing Mrs.Khanolkar were her
deep and intimate knowledge of Indian mythology, Sanskrit and Vedas,
which he hoped would give the design a truly Indian ethos. She was a
painter and an artist, and wife of Captain (later Major General)
Vikram Ramji Khanolkar, a serving officer with the Sikh Regiment, at
the time of the request.
Coincidentally, the first PVC was awarded to her elder daughter' s
brother-in-law Major Som Nath Sharma from 4 Kumaon Regiment who was
posthumously awarded for his valour of November 3, 1947 during the
1947-48 Indo-Pak war in
Kashmir.

The design of Param Vir Chakra :

Savitribai
thought of the sage Dadhichi - a vedic rishi who made the ultimate
sacrifice to the Gods. He gave up his body so that the Gods could
fashion a deadly weapon - a Vajra, or thunderbolt, from his thigh bone.
Savitribai gave Major General Hira Lal Atal, the design of the double
Vajra, common in Tibet. Its a myth that the medal also carries images of
the fearless warrior king Shivaji' s sword Bhavani but this is a
popular perpetuated myth.

The Indian General Service Medal (1947) which contained the Bhavani
sword was withdrawn later.

The
medal itself is a small one. It is cast in bronze, and has a radius of
13/8 inch. In the centre, on a raised circle, is the state emblem,
surrounded by four replicas of Indra's Vajra, flanked by the sword of
Shivaji. The decoration is suspended from a straight swiveling
suspension bar, and is held by a 32 mm purple ribbon.

Savitri Bai had always done a lot a social work which she continued
in her later years, working with soldiers and their families
and refugees who had been displaced during the Partition. After her
husband' s death in 1952, she found refuge in spirituality, and retired
to the Ramakrishna Math. She wrote a book on the Saints of Maharashtra
that is popular even today.

Mrs. Savitri Bai Khanolkar died in 1990, but her memory lives on in
the great award that she designed. It is fitting that a remarkable lady
who truly loved India and was intensely proud of being an Indian
designed an award that
is given to soldiers who love their country so much that they are ready
to die for it. For more information on the recipients of PVC since 1947

BEHIND EVERY MAN, THERE'S A SMART WOMAN!

Description: cid:1.4015623578@web30302.mail.mud.yahoo.com

Barbara Walters, of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict.

She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.

She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands.
Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem happy to maintain the old custom.

Ms Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked,
'Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?'

The woman looked Ms Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said,
"Land mines"
The moral of this story is (as it always was):
BEHIND EVERY MAN, THERE'S A SMART WOMAN!

Inside America's suburban dream: Intimate images capture the home comforts and togetherness of middle-class family life

By Daily Mail Reporter
PUBLISHED: 02:20 GMT, 29 July 2013 | UPDATED: 08:34 GMT, 29 July 2013

Photographer Beth Yarnelle Edwards sees the suburbs of Silicon Valley as the 'physical embodiment of the American Dream.'
To her this is 'a place where natural beauty intersects with opportunities in high-tech industry, an increasingly diverse yet predominately affluent population, and access to nearby cultural centers.'
Edwards has been capturing idyllic middle-class life in America and Europe for 16 years and her work reveals comfort, aspiration and stability, but also the more mundane aspects of a suburban existence.
She took her first series of evocative photos, entitled Suburban Dreams, in the Silicon Valley in 1997, where she had lived for many years.
The photographer explains that: 'Sometimes, I'm so interested in what's going on with people in their homes that I want to know what's in the closet or under the bed.
'In my photographs I aspire to tell the viewer not just about what can be seen, but also about things that are hidden and locked away…'
Edwards visits the homes first and interviews her subjects. She then collaborates with them, asking the families to improvise poses based on their lives.
She says: 'As I attempt to reveal some basic truth about my subjects, I'm attracted to the peculiar or surprising. This can take many forms, ranging from humor to visual quirkiness to a sense of universality, or even the uncanny.'
'I think of my images as being like genre paintings because they're intended to depict a typical event in the home rather than a decisive moment,' Edwards told Slate.com. 'And like genre paintings, I strive to include as much information about the people and the place as possible.'
More photographs and information can be found at bethyarnelleedwards.com and her Suburban Dreams book is available at Amazon.

Hair loss myths – and the truth

Receding and balding are two of the biggest problems men face in terms of haircare.
But will these old wives’ tales help you keep your hair on or are they false?
By Kim Hookem-Smith

Hair loss can cause great self-consciousness in men and most resign themselves to the fact that there’s
little that can be done to prevent receding and balding unless you’re a multi-millionaire footballer
and don’t mind the indignity of the media following your hair transplant.
We asked international hair loss expert Dr Marcovici if these common hair loss myths are true or false.

A reeceeding hairline can hit young ©Rex

Can hair products affect hair loss?
They can.

There are two main hair styling-related methods that can cause hair loss.
The first is the use of strong chemical reagents - such as those found in certain
commercially available hair bleaches, hair colour products, and also perm solutions.
Eventually, these cytotoxic materials can cause hair breakage and also damage to the
living follicle beneath the skin surface.

The second way we can lose hair in pursuit of our hair style is through what’s called traction alopecia.
It’s basically mechanical stress caused to the hair-producing follicles by a regular pulling force.
It can eventually stop the follicle being able to produce healthy hair.

Are natural shampoos without chemicals better for hair?

Not to my knowledge. In my view, there are a number of commercially available hair shampoos
that have never been linked to negative side-effects and also work very well.
They’re not 100 per cent natural, but I don’t think that matters.
I'm thinking of brands like Neutrogena and the Lonil line of shampoos.
Shampoos and hair products aren't a major cause of hair loss ©Rex)

Do you inherit balding from your mum’s side?
Yes.  And no.

Unfortunately you can inherit the genes that leave you susceptible
to baldness from either or both parents.  They’re not gender-specific.
Pattern hair loss can also skip a generation so that your grandparents may suffer hair loss
but both your parents may not.  As a general rule, the more members of your family suffer
from pattern hair loss, the more likely you will.

Once it’s gone its gone – is it true you can’t grow new follicles?
This is true, I’m afraid. The best you can do is try to prevent losing more.
But it's not the whole story.  In the next ten to fifteen years, it is almost a certainty
that stem cell research will lead experts to grow hair follicles in a lab and then used to
boost the thinning scalp.  It’s an exciting time, but it’s not quite here yet!

Does stress makes your hair fall out?

The evidence seems to suggest that stress can indeed contribute to hair loss.
This it might be a bit misleading as if you’re going to lose your hair
due to genetics, stress isn’t the cause.

Do bald men have more testosterone?
No, this isn’t true, it’s more about how your body reacts to the testosterone hormone.
Three things contribute to baldness.  First, genetics - you have to have susceptibility genes.
Second, age.  Nine year old children do not suffer from common pattern hair loss.
The third factor is circulating hormones.

In your body, testosterone converts to something called 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, or DHT.
DHT is a well-described hormone that sets in motion the negative growth cycle that causes
hair to grow progressively thinner over time.
The level of testosterone isn’t a problem, it’s how your body converts it to DHT,
which is largely caused by your genetics.
Headstands might be fun but they won't do much to stop hair loss ©Rex

Standing on your head or massage gets more blood to the scalp and helps reduce hair loss

The reality is that scalp hair doesn't thin because it's starved of blood.
It thins because the "software" in the follicle receives the message from
circulating hormones to begin shutting down.

Scalp massage may feel good.  But it will do little or nothing to preserve your hair.
Hanging upside down like a bat will bring greater blood flow to your scalp.
But again, it won't do anything to stimulate hair growth.
